Overview
Muscle relaxants are the most popular cosmetic treatment for reducing and preventing the formation of lines and wrinkles. Antiwrinkle cosmetic injections work by relaxing the facial muscles that tense and cause wrinkles by pulling on the skin.
These muscle relaxing properties also therapeutically treat jaw clenching/temporomandibular (TMJ) pain, migraines and excessive sweating known as hyperhidrosis.
Due to Australian government regulations, we are unable to name the drugs we administer. However we also know and appreciate each individual has a preference to which product is administered. Therefore we stock all antiwrinkle drugs available – the choice is yours, or we are happy to guide you.

How antiwrinkle injections work
As we age, repeated use and contraction of a muscle causes the overlying skin to create lines and wrinkles that eventually deepen and aesthetically change our appearance.
Muscle relaxant injections are neuromodulators that prevent the release of acetylcholine at the site of the injection. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter chemical released by the body that tells the brain to contract certain muscles. When this chemical is blocked, the muscles cannot contract, thereby preventing lines from forming.
In the case of migraines and TMJ pain, these injections reduce pain by decreasing the overactivity of the muscle.
Injections are administered with precision to allow for natural movement and expression. It is important to know that you do not have to look frozen (unless of course you want to).

It takes approximately 2 weeks for the neuromodulators to fully take effect, so please do not expect immediate results.

Effects last for approximately 3–6 months. This varies from person to person, as each individual metabolises the treatment at a slightly different rate.
Bruising is the most common side effect, however it is temporary and will resolve without leaving any lasting marks.
Rarer side effects include headaches that may last for 24–48 hours and temporary eyelid or eyebrow droop. We must stress that these are not common side effects and they are only temporary.
We do not treat women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because we are an evidence-based cosmetic clinic and we do not feel that sufficient studies have been done into any potential adverse effects on the child.
As with any injection, there may be mild discomfort. We can help to alleviate this with a variety of measures, including distraction techniques or application of cold compresses.
