Regain your confidence with this transformative laser treatment.
Fotona SMOOTH is a gentle and non-surgical laser. It is highly effective for treating problems such as involuntary leakage when sneezing or exercising, loss of vaginal firmness, and vaginal dryness and irritation.
Overview
Light bladder leakage or urinary incontinence affects 1 in 3 Australian women over the age of 35.
Many women who suffer light bladder leakage find it embarrassing to talk about, let alone seek advice or treatment. This means many women are unaware that a simple yet effective non-surgical solution is available.
Fotona SMOOTH is a specially engineered laser that delivers gentle, painless heat pulses to the vagina, strengthening and improving the tissue quality. We use this system for the following procedures.
-
Urinary incontinence
The IncontiLase procedure tightens the mucosal tissue and improves pelvic floor muscle function. -
Vaginal prolapse
The ProlapLase procedure strengthens tissue and reduces the prolapse stage. -
Vaginal atrophy
The RenovaLase procedure regenerates deteriorated tissue and alleviates dryness, itchiness and irritation. -
Vaginal tightening
The IntimaLase procedure increases sexual pleasure and overall positive quality of life in treated women.

How treatment works
We deliver four different procedures with the Fotona SMOOTH laser. This is an Er:YAG laser that uses photothermal properties to stimulate collagen regeneration, which shrinks, thickens and tightens tissue within the vaginal canal.
Urinary incontinence
IncontiLase is a gentle laser procedure for treating stress incontinence. Mild heating of tissue triggers new collagen formation and strengthening of the vaginal wall and urethra, which helps to minimise urine leakage.
Vaginal prolapse
Therapeutic laser light is delivered through the vagina to the problematic prolapsed areas and the whole surface wall of the vaginal canal. The results of the procedure are strengthened tissue and a reduction in the prolapse stage.
Vaginal atrophy
RenovaLase is a laser treatment for vaginal dryness associated with menopause. Gentle Fotona SMOOTH laser pulses stimulate renewal of the vaginal mucous surface, resulting in improved levels of lubrication and relief of vaginal dryness and discomfort.
Vaginal tightening
IntimaLase delivers SMOOTH laser pulses to the surface of the vaginal canal. IntimaLase has been shown to increase sexual pleasure and positively affect the overall quality of life in treated women.
Your FAQ
Before you commit to a treatment, Dr Guy Kinsella performs a consultation to determine whether it will achieve results for you.
We request that a recent pap smear has been performed by your local doctor or gynaecologist. In addition, a pelvic examination is performed by Dr Kinsella prior to treatment.
Yes. Treatment cannot be performed in the case of current infection or positive pap smear results.
No. Laser treatments should not be performed on pregnant or breastfeeding women.
After giving birth, we recommend that you wait between 6–12 months before having treatment.
Regardless of which condition you have, you should expect to undertake a minimum of 2–3 treatments at 4–6 week intervals. We will explain your treatment plan with you in your first consultation and why we recommend the proposed number of sessions.
You will need to prepare for your consultation. We ask that you completely empty your bladder 2 hours before your consultation. Then over the next hour, drink 1 litre of water to refill your bladder (it is important that your bladder is full when you arrive for your appointment).
Dr Guy Kinsella will perform a bladder ultrasound and a gynaecological examination, and then recommend the best treatment and timeframe.
This is a completely normal feeling that we see in a number of women. Both Dr Guy Kinsella and Sally are here to put you at ease: we take the initial consultation at your pace and allow plenty of time to answer your questions.
We call ourselves an inclusive clinic, because we want everyone to feel comfortable seeking treatment that will enhance their quality of life.
Yes, menopausal women can have the treatment. In fact, the treatment directly benefits menopausal women.
It is important to note that the effectiveness of your treatment may be reduced with advanced age. This is due to the decreased capacity of the body’s natural regeneration process, which is stimulated by the Fotona SMOOTH procedures. We can discuss expected outcomes with you in your consultation.
We call ourselves an inclusive clinic, because we want everyone to feel comfortable seeking treatment that will enhance their quality of life.
Results at Hunter Cosmetic and Laser have been shown to be effective for up to 5 years, however this will vary between patients. Symptoms begin to return gradually, and therefore a maintenance treatment is recommended.
While this is a quick walk-in/walk-out procedure, we do advise taking the following precautions after each session:
- Avoid lifting heavy objects and long periods of exercise for up to 14 days
- Abstain from sexual intercourse for 1–2 weeks
A number of clinical studies have proven the safety of Fotona SMOOTH procedures, and no serious side effects have been reported (see research here).
Unfortunately this procedure is not eligible for public or private health rebates.
